Flip- IT! Flipped Classroom in European Vocational Education

The aim of Flip-IT!, the educational research and development project was to integrate the methodology of the Flipped Classroom into the teaching practice of vocational training institutions in 5 countries (United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, the Czech Republic and Hungary).

The curriculum developed in the project and the online course based on it were a great success for both the participating teachers and the students involved. The material of the Hungarian training is available in the form of accredited in-service teacher training  and the book “Flipped Classroom In Practice - Methodological Renewal of Vocational Training” can be downloaded free by anyone.

What is the Flipped Classroom method?

Flipped classroom is a work-based, collaborative and problem-oriented teaching method that takes advantage of the pedagogical potential of modern information and communication technology (ICT) tools. In the flipped classroom, the teacher is not an exclusive source of information, but rather a mentor supporting the learning process.

Why is a Flipped Classroom useful?

More enjoyable learning

The accelerated technological advances of recent decades have drastically changed our lives: we live differently, we work differently. By incorporating the modern tools and technologies, that our students enjoy using into our methods, we can make learning much more enjoyable and even easier for them.

Developing useful skills

But it’s not just the technological change and the net generation of students what make it necessary to change teaching methods. There is also a large shift in the skills required by the labor market. The emphasis has shifted to problem solving, critical thinking, creativity - and traditional pedagogical methods (such as frontal education) alone are incapable of developing such 21st century skills.
